A living land, in the heart of the Massif Central
The green clay we use comes exclusively from the lands of Velay, a region shaped by volcanic fire and the slow passage of time. This land, nourished by ash and groundwater, concentrates within it a unique telluric energy, which makes clay a living treatment. Used since Antiquity for its absorbent, detoxifying and regenerative properties, it already appeared in Greek medical treatises and in monastic pharmacopoeias of the Middle Ages.
It is found in the writings of Dioscorides, in the poultices of Hildegard of Bingen, and in the silent gestures of rural healers. In Auvergne, this knowledge took a more discreet form, transmitted through gestures rather than texts. Clay was applied to relieve inflammation, calm the skin, or draw out impurities. These practices, rooted in observation, form part of a living memory that still resonates today.
In October 2023, the Argiles du Velay were granted a French Geographical Indication (IG), affirming what the land had long held: a mineral born of a singular territory, and of the hands that have carefully extracted and transformed it across generations.
Purify, regulate, refine skin texture
What makes Velay green clay truly singular is not just its origin, but its internal structure. Unlike most clays, which are dominated by a single mineral, it is a natural association of three: illite, kaolinite, and montmorillonite. This balance is what gives it its intelligence on the skin. Illite brings a gentle absorbent action, kaolinite softens and refines, while montmorillonite has the ability to bind and draw out impurities. Together, they create a material that purifies without aggressiveness.
Its green colour, often perceived as a sign of vitality, comes from iron preserved in its non-oxidized form, an indication of the specific conditions under which it formed. The clay is also naturally low in quartz, which contributes to its smooth texture and allows it to remain comfortable on the skin despite its strong purifying properties.
This mineral composition also explains how the clay works. When mixed with water, it becomes a surface of exchange. Its structure attracts and captures excess sebum, pollutants, and residues and tightens pores. Through subtle ion exchanges, it can release trace elements while binding unwanted particles. The result is not a superficial cleansing, but a rebalancing of the skin’s environment itself. Rich in minerals, it stimulates natural skin functions, promotes tissue oxygenation and leaves the skin clear, fresh, visibly clarified. It is particularly recommended for combination with oily skin, prone to imperfections, but can also be used occasionally as a detox treatment, in case of dull complexion or tired skin.
Because of the high absorbency of Velay clay, it is traditionally recommended to keep the masks brief to avoid overdrying the skin. For sensitive or dry skin, combining it with hydrating elements such as oils and glycerin helps maintain balance and comfort.
